What Crowd answers
Crowd is the Desk Read line for positioning. It reads funding (who pays whom each interval) and open interest change, then states whether the crowd leans long or short.
That answers a simple risk question: if you take a side, are you sitting with the crowded book or against it? For primers see Funding Rate Explained and Open Interest Explained.
How to read a Crowd line
The live line typically includes:
- who is paying funding (longs pay or shorts pay) and the rate per interval,
- how open interest moved over the last day,
- a plain sentence that the crowd is long or short.
Funding is a position cost between traders, not an exchange fee. Rising open interest with one-sided funding often means the lean is getting more crowded. Always take the current sentence from the Desk Read block or /api/desk_read.
Crowd with Pull and Hurt
Crowd alone does not say where price goes. Pair it:
- Pull shows which dollar wall is heavier near price.
- Hurt shows where your leverage dies.
- Crowd shows whether that structure sits with a crowded long or short book.
A crowded long book under a heavy short wall above is a different risk picture than a crowded short book under the same wall. Your plan still has to come from you.
Limits
Funding can stay extreme for days while price trends the same way. Open interest aggregates many venues and tenors imperfectly. Crowd is a lean meter, not a timing tool.
Every level we publish is scored in public, misses included. Check the live grade on /proof before you lean on any number. Until a published-levels bucket is marked sellable, we quote no hit rate at all.
