Funding Rate Calculator

Work out what perpetual-futures funding actually costs (or earns) over the life of a position, before the position teaches you.

Your funding scenario

Funding is a per-interval payment on the full notional. Enter the position, a rate, and how long you plan to hold; the calculator projects the total at that rate.

Funding you pay over 30 days
.
Per interval.
Per day.
Annualized rate.
% of notional over period.

A positive rate means longs pay shorts; a negative rate means shorts pay longs. This projection holds ONE rate constant, and real funding never sits still: every venue re-publishes its own rate each interval, intervals differ per venue, and the rate flips sign exactly when positioning gets crowded. Treat the output as a scenario, not a forecast. Funding is charged on notional, not margin, so on a leveraged position the carry is proportionally larger against what you posted. Crowded, one-sided positioning is also where liquidation cascades begin: see it on the Money Map, 2 hours behind.

Extreme funding shows one-sided positioning

Sustained funding extremes show one-sided positioning. Compare the published record, including reached and missed levels, with its sample sizes and confidence bounds.

Questions traders actually ask

What is the funding rate?

Perpetual futures have no expiry, so exchanges pin them to spot with a periodic payment between longs and shorts. When the rate is positive, longs pay shorts; when negative, shorts pay longs. It is charged on the full notional of the position, not on the margin you posted.

How often is funding charged?

Most major venues settle every 8 hours (3 times a day), some every 4 or 1 hour, and each venue publishes its own interval and its own rate per contract. The rate also moves from interval to interval and flips sign with sentiment, which is why a constant rate here is a scenario, not a forecast.

Does funding really matter?

Per interval it looks trivial, but it compounds and it is levied on notional. A steady 0.01% every 8 hours is about 10.95% of notional per year; a crowded trade printing 0.1% intervals costs about 109.5% of notional annualized. On a 10x position that comes out of a margin post one tenth the size.
